TRAVELLER - KEMBARA KASIH

22th June 1999,

This is my still life pencil sketches done in 1999. It was a sketch of an ordinary traveller beg of mine which I bought after getting my SPM result. Nevertheless, this sketch marked the day of my endless search for my eternal love. I found someone that I can rest my hearts in heaven. That was the day I came back from the journey to find peace in my mind; to make a big step in my life. To be in LOVE.

On the bottom end of the sketch it said "akhirnya perantauan/pencarianku selama ini berakhir..." means "at last I've finally found what I've been looking for in my long journey"

Actually it was just the end for searching, but the beginning
of new life... a new chapter in my lifetime.

BUKIT KUDA BOOKLET

This is a freelance graphic work for development in Klang. It was an advertisement exercise to suite marketing purposed. The design was done for a small handy booklet size. I then made a sample of the actual booklet. Although many people seem to think that "marketing" and "advertising" are synonymous, they are not. I admired people who do marketing. They have the ability to persuade people. To push people for something that benefits them. To change somebody's mind from not believing on something to believing it by heart.

The photos used were samples taken from the Internet. If the client agrees only then would we buy the images from the image provider. But of course I never did so because it was UNPUBLISHED work. I lost the bid to another advertisement company that is more experience than me. I knew about my competitor but I still did the job as a favour to my client's request. I shouldn’t do that in the first place if I feel that there's no guarantee of getting the job. It would just be a waste of time. And time in most business thinker's mind equals to money; TIME=MONEY.

However, I took the opportunity to explore something new and to enrich my portfolio. Therefore; TIME = EXPERIENCE. This loss was then covered back by another job from the same client. Art and graphics are my second nature. That’s probably why I enjoy doing it even for unpaid work. I take passion as a reward instead.

That's why Richard Brindley (RIBA director of practice) commented on "why do architects earn so much less than surveyors and project managers, let alone lawyers and doctors? He Said:

"...architects are generally less motivated by money and are attracted to creativity of architecture as a passion and vocation than as a professional career."

JUNIOR INVENTOR

Last weekend I bought my son a set of medium sized LEGO. "Creator Series" for age 6 to 12 years. At first he wanted a batman theme Lego design that he saw on website, but it wasn't available. After much bargain with my son, he finally agrees to exchange it to another version of Lego. Lucky me, creator version is much cheaper and a good value too.

After he has done all the 6 standard designs in the book provided, he started to explore his own version. This is when it turns to be more educational. I said to Azhan “You must read, and then think. Then use your imagination to make your own". “I have a good idea", he replied. “Azhan dah besor" he speaks in Malay version.

When your child started to invent, it means he started to think. When he starts to think, he begins to understand a reason. If he becomes a man with reasons, he's going to be a wise man; a gentleman. (Also "anak soleh"amin)

I never have a Lego set in my life before. Just simple block toys as far as I could remember. Not able to buy it in Malaysia before because lego is a bit expensive and my son is still small at that time. But that is in the past. I'm not blaming my father for not having one, because he got his own hard times. Now at least my son could enjoy the dreams that our past generations cannot afford to. Alhamdulillah.

WORKAHOLIC

During the time digging the old works of mine, I found a scan newspaper advertisement that I purposely edit to describe my overload work in former office.

It’s not solely the firm's fault but a reality for most architectural firm. Work till late, overtime; take more time, extension of time and etc. Seems like 24 hours a day is not enough. To make it worst I did a few more freelance works that I really need to support all the liability that I have (trust me you don't want to be the eldest son in the family!). Not to blame on it because I am grateful to serve others.

But there are times in life something happens and pops out of your mind to think. The time have come when my son going to start his school life. I need to slowdown the time and sit back to enjoy reading bedtime story for my son, Azhan.

Back then, I do understand that I am Workaholic person. But I had no choice because the responsibility is on my shoulder. However since I'm here in small village of Bury, I do get the therapy on reducing my workaholic and have more passion on my life. My son and I walking together down the park to the school. Devoted time wisely and enjoy every moment in time with my son and soon family again.

A few attempts from me tried to get back on working extra job. Yet, is has no result. I guess it has been written by God that I should take this time to think and be passionate in everything that I do. Getting to know myself is the biggest project in my life.

Colloquially, a workaholic is a person who is addicted to work. There is no generally accepted medical definition of such a condition, although some forms of stress and obsessive-compulsive disorder can be work-related. Although the term "workaholic" usually has a negative connotation, it is sometimes used by people wishing to express their devotion to one's career in positive terms. The "work" in question is usually associated with a paying job, but it may also refer to independent pursuits such as sports, music, art, or blogging.

DISABLED RAMP

This is just a small exercise to visualise a disabled ramp in detail. Although it just a small job but it give a great value on understanding detail. The design and practical issues on the construction (esp. the brick layering and railing configuration) is being process directly thru the 3d.This also given the 'layman' a clear picture of the construction.

As for fun things to do as a break between jobs, I make myself a simple walk through animation. Enjoy!

After a long weeks being involve with the design, the first stage for development is now being submitted.

The client is already "happy" with the design and looking forward to present it to potential tenant. As for me I need to hold the design process for a while and move to another project until the client agrees on the next stage schedule.

Most of the view here is just a massing study for the development. But it is good enough to portray the design intentions. Even though I'm not showing the "nice" images (like Vray rendering/3max), the design planning for the project is workable and practical.

This is a site feasibility study. It gives the client a draft design on the possibilities for the development.

What admired me were the RGP Chairman Mr Terry Ratcliffe sketches. Not a fancy looking sketches but the colour code from the maker really works to deliver the massage. It’s been also a very accurate sketch!

Besides that I work closely under Mr. Paul O'Shaughnessy supervision. I've learnt a few "design guide" from him.

a. 15 m maximum internal space for natural ventilation
b. wall with window shouldn't face towards a blank wall (fire wall) to provide ventilation
c. parking calculation for FOOD STORE: 1 car spaces not more than 14 sqm
d parking calculation for NORMAL RETAIL: 1 car spaces not more than 20 sqm
e. Service area turning circle clearance = 25 m diameter + 2 m radius for extra gap

It's time for another Sunday Car Boot in Bury. We don't really have many car boot around here. The Club can hold it only 8 times in a year and most of it would be in summer (not like other places that had it every week). Nearby neighbours are looking forward for the day.

The special about car boot in Bury for me is that I do get involve to lend a hand. I take this involvement as something to keep reminds me on my social responsibilities. Make my life more meaningful. Malays quotes "hidup biar berbudi".

Some people involve for such community activities with a hidden agenda. They choose a community that can "benefit" them in return. As an ordinary man I also want something out of it...but the things in return that I do hope for myself is to get satisfaction by helping others.

Thanks to Zahir, Ija and her husband Jefri who was willing to watch over my young lad Azhan. They do bring him along to the event to find something that might be "rubbish" to others but a "fortune" to another.

Azhan do ask me "Papa, are you working today?", "No, I'm not working today Azhan, Papa just come to help". And I hope he could learn and understand; someday...

AZHAN's FIRST ART EXHIBITION

13 June 2007, Wednesday. St. Lukes Primary Hall.

This was a big day for my son, Azhan. It is one of the most historical event of his school days; his artwork is exhibited in his school's exhibition day. The event was held in the school hall with the purpose of collecting Charity fund for the school.

On that day as usual I fetch him at school. When I arrived, he told me " Come here papa, I want to show you" he said. He grabbed my hand and forced me to follow him to the hall. Inside the hall there were many more pupil at his age displaying their masterpiece. From a glance all the paintings are almost alike, maybe because the paintings are on the same theme.

"Papa, azhan painting number 31. Where?" my sons woke me from my mesmerise with his question on his painting location. We need to find it based on the sticker number on his shirt. Finally we came to a front row and on top of the display panel. "there it is!"azhan shouted. And I smiled.

At first, I was kind of disappointed when came to see his drawing with a similar subject like others. "What is that?" I asked him. " It is a flower, ladybird, butterfly and blue sky" he explained. He should draw anything that he likes. I compared his work with others on the same subject of drawing. It was all the same but my son had done it better, he managed to put more solid and vibrant colour and also have a more natural sense of composition." Well done!! very good" I replied with a big smile.He was happy

Then, several teachers approached and commented on his work." That's very good, isn't?" "Brilliant!" said another. " You like to draw those?" "What are those?". They asked more questions than me. Once again I learned from my son.

Then his class teacher came, Mr.Pittam. " Azhan is getting better. He did very well" commenting about my question on his school performance."He did this painting by using his very own finger". I didn't notice that before and that made amazed me more.

The funny thing is was when I have to buy my son's very own painting! It was actually to cover the cost of the frame and a part of the charity. A notice saying, "paintings can be bought for 5 pound each from Ms Kirk in the hall at 3.30 today and tomorrow". 5 pound! i could have bough 5 frames and make the frame on my own. But this is for the school charity, and it's a good practice to teach the young ones the value of helping others. And I bought one!

URBAN GENERATOR

Back in April 2001

URBAN GENERATOR, was my idea for the 7th semester design project during diploma. Those were the days when students try to use bombastic words to explain their designs. As for me apart from just creating "terms" I chose to think about the uniqueness to my movement. It must not just fit or use for the project but could be applied in my future career. I was very ambitious about thinking of such movement - a very sweet dream.
However I strongly believe it is still relevant in the future. I will need to expand the topic soon. As far as my previous research is concerned, no such term has even been used before. Since I’ve been busy making a living, these kind of "thoughts" have been left under the desk to dust. This blog has re-discovered my long lost potential ideas.

Lucky enough today I got my own Internet connection (could not afford one before-using the university-Internet those day) and surf again to find if there is such term being used "THE URBAN GENERATOR". It’s good to find a few more new designs that use this term these days. Some of it had won competitions.

Should have plan on this-during those day I need to print 2 times (background and content) and finally attached A3 sheets to become A1 paper.
I guess that explains why my idea was sellable compared to my poor presentation board (my old PC cannot handle the load). Moral of the story is; do not keep those ideas under the desk. I’m quite afraid of my idea being copycat by others but hey, who am I to protect/claim my idea - I'm nobody, and it’s good to share ideas and develop it even further.
